How Long Will It Take to Get Same Day Crowns?

Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges New Windsor, NY

Traditional crowns usually require two or more visits to complete; however, same day crowns only require one visit. This can be an attractive option for people who want to avoid having to take additional time off work, schedule childcare or otherwise interrupt their busy schedules for multiple dental visits.

Dental crowns overview

A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape and functionality or improve its appearance. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, such as porcelain fused to metal, metal alloys, ceramics, composite resin, and porcelain.

Why dental crowns are used

Dental crowns are used when fillings are not strong enough to repair a tooth with significant structural damage due to an accident, wear or decay. They are also sometimes needed to strengthen teeth that have been weakened due to a root canal or filled multiple times. Additionally, crowns may be used to reshape or recolor teeth, to hold a fixed bridge in place or for a variety of cosmetic procedures that improve the appearance of teeth.

Traditional crowns

The procedures for getting traditional and same day crowns are similar but vary in some key ways. The process for traditional crowns consists of these steps:

  1. The dentist assesses teeth and takes X-rays if needed
  2. The tooth is shaped so the crown will fit properly
  3. An impression of the tooth is made and digital images may be taken
  4. Impressions and images are sent to the lab to make the crown
  5. The temporary crown is placed
  6. The temporary crown is removed and replaced with a permanent crown

The initial appointment usually lasts about two hours. It then generally takes two to three weeks for the lab to make the permanent crown, and removal of the temporary crown and placement of the permanent crown usually takes an additional 30 minutes. Patients are advised to avoid certain food and drink that may dislodge the temporary crown while waiting for the permanent crown to be made. With proper oral care, crowns should last 10 to 15 years before needing to be replaced.

Same day crowns

The same day crown procedure also begins by examining and shaping the tooth. However, instead of making a physical impression of the tooth, the dentist uses a digital camera to take optical impressions. These impressions are used to create a 3D model of the tooth. The 3D model is transferred to an in-house milling machine that replicates it out of porcelain. The completed crown is then fitted and bonded to the tooth. No temporary crown is needed, and the entire process can usually be completed in under two hours.

Same day crowns can reduce the number of dental visits and the amount of time spent in the dentist's chair compared to traditional crowns. With an average appointment requiring just two hours to complete, many patients can return to work or other activities the same day.
