Orthodontics: Is Invisalign® Right for You?

Invisalign New Windsor, NY

Orthodontics can get you a straighter smile. Clear aligners like Invisalign® are one of your best options since these restorations do not ruin the appearance of your smile. Made out of rigid, transparent plastics; Invisalign aligner trays are virtually impossible to notice when worn. It allows you to get the treatments you need without having to deal with the stares and questions people who wear conventional braces often find themselves dealing with.

Orthodontics with Invisalign

When it comes to orthodontics, Invisalign aligners can be used to address a wide range of issues like crooked teeth, overbites, and underbites. They are usually used for teeth alignment problems that are caused by the patient’s teeth being wrongly positioned. Clear aligners are not as effective when treating severe orthodontic issues that are caused by the patient’s jaw being poorly positioned. Fixed appliances like braces are typically needed to fix such problems.

Wondering if clear aligners like Invisalign are the right solution for your orthodontic issues? Here are some important things to go over when making a decision:

1. The cause of your poor teeth alignment

As we mentioned earlier, teeth alignment issues caused by the location of the jaw might require other orthodontic devices like braces. Invisalign is often used to treat mild to moderate alignment problems.

Eligible candidates for clear aligners are typically over the age of 13. At that point, all of their permanent teeth should have erupted except for their wisdom teeth. These should have emerged by the age of 21.

Dentists perform Invisalign Smile Assessment tests to determine if these clear aligners are the right such for a patient and their unique problems.

2. The patient’s age

The teeth of children are constantly moving as their jaw continues to grow. This makes it extremely challenging to make projections for Invisalign treatment. Invisalign involves wearing a series of aligners over the course of treatment. Each set of trays is worn for roughly two weeks before being switched out with another that moves the patient’s teeth closer to the targeted position.

Fixed appliances like conventional braces work best on developing teeth. Treatments can start as early as seven years old with braces.

3. Your commitment level

Invisalign treatment is not for everyone. Patients need to be disciplined enough to wear the mouth tray for at least 20 hours each day. The trays should only be removed when it is time to clean the mouth or eat. Failing to wear the aligners as recommended can lead to diminished results.

Patients might also have to wear a retainer when their treatment with Invisalign is over. A retainer helps to keep the patient’s teeth in their new position until they have fully set in.
